Bats to fear or to celebrate

Commissioned Work, 2021

"Bats have existed for at least 50 million years, long before the first humans emerged. Humans have a long-established fascination with bats, possibly originating from our ancestors living in caves and cohabiting with bats. Throughout the world people and bats have shared their home environments for a long time. Unsurprisingly this close association has resulted in bats being feared and celebrated in many different cultures. In some cultures, bats are omens of death and disease and are associated with evil, witchcraft and vampires. But in China and Japan bats are associated with luck and good fortune."

The comic is exhibited as part of the Belonging gallery in the Manchester Museum.
